Similar but different
All of these organisms share similar characteristics but yet live in different habitats
All of these animals belong to the Felidae family, which is the biological family of cats.
These felids share many of the same characteristics but are diverse through the habitats they live in. They have a differing minor characteristics from each other as well, due to adaptations to their particular environment.
SIMILARITIESAll of the following seven cats have many common and similar characteristics...
-have whiskers to sense surroundings -claws for hunting and climbing -keen eyesight and ears -radius and ulna are unfused, allowing more freedom of movement and flexibility (the radius and ulna are bones comprising the forearm) -coats that help them camouflage in their particular environment >same purpose (characteristic), difference appearance (based on the different habitat) |
DIFFERENCES
These cats may share similar traits, but they are all found in different habitats and environments. Based on the certain environments these animals are exposed to, they will make the necessary adaptations as well.
Sumatran tigers and jaguars, and clouded leopards are found in rainforest/tropical forest related habitats, the Canadian lynx and cougar are found in colder, forested habitats, and the African lions and cheetahs are found in more grassy savanna regions.
All of these habitats are different from one another and these organisms are able to show diversity through their habitats.
For example, because cougars live in cooler, forested regions, their thicker coats that allow them to live in such climates, whereas a cheetah living in the savanna wouldn't find use for it.
Although all of these animals are part of the same family, they differences that they have brought upon themselves through the habitats they occupy represent their diversity to one another.
